John 1:22 Then said they unto him, who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
What an important question is asked of John the Baptist here and one we should asked ourselves daily. If you study this passage of Scripture, along with chapter 3 of John you will recognize that John clearly understood who he was and what God had called him to do. The Pharisees wanted John to identify himself. They wanted to know who he was and why he was doing what he was doing. John identified himself with Christ and His work. He knew who was and why he was doing what he did. When questions began to arise between his disciples and the Lord's disciples, John made it clear where he stood. In the end he topped it off with "He must increase but I must decrease". In a world where most people are lost and have no true identity, the Christian has failed because he to doesn't seem to know his own identity. How can we help this world with its condition if we don't recognize our own need to identify with Christ and His work. John could have set up his own little following and built an empire around himself but he knew who he was and why he was sent. Do we? There are no big I's and little u's in God's plan but only a big God! Christian, Who are you? Let's show some identification and full allegiance to our Lord and His work. How do people know you at school, job, in the market place or especially at home? If we identify with Christ and His work our lives will constantly say "He must increase but I must decrease". Lets work together to bring glory and honor to our Savior that others might identify with His person and His cross!
